Contrary to current popular belief, I don't believe that cicada nymphs typically "fall to the ground and burrow their way to feed and grow upon tree roots". I propose that cicada nymphettes actually are laid within the tree sap and make their way to the tree roots through the lymphatic system (tree sap) of the tree itself. From there, they burrow out to emerge from the tree root, then reattach themselves to feed upon the sap externally to the root.
This theory is far more practical and logical than the current thinking of
nymphs falling from the branches to burrow themselves down through the leaf
litter and soil before finding an appropriate root to feed upon.
